  • SOTD rules

(I never got around to writing yesterday. Sorry Alex.)

  • Spaces

Have you noticed that some spaces are way easier to work in than others?

  • Headphones

So I recently got some new headphones. I'd been thinking about getting some can-style headphones for a while, but a) I'm cheap and b) I don't have great hearing to begin with (especially in my right ear; in case you've noticed me turning my head at a weird angle to hear you in a noisy environment, now you know!). But then I figured, since I'm going to be writing in spaces other than my house, it'd be nice to have some at least decent headphones so I could listen to my own music instead of whatever music is being played at the coffeeshop or whatever.

  • The playoff push

Let's talk about basketball for a minute here.

  • Boston

There is only one thing to write words about today.

  • I did things today

One of the great things about being an adult (even if I don't necessarily feel like an adult all the time) is that you can buy slash do stuff and nobody will tell you no. (Within reason of course.)

  • Consanguinity

    (Isn't that a great word?)

  • How I learned to stop worrying and love the Madridistas

This is a story about picking a La Liga side.

  • Lo bueno, si breve, dos veces bueno

So today I was writing a conference proposal. It asked for a 150-word abstract and a 150-word “Background and Description of Work.” It's surprisingly difficult to write 150 words about something, especially if you have a bad habit like I do of needless verbosity. Let me illustrate with an excerpt explaining some of my quant data sources:

  • Just write some words

So I'm trying to write my dissertation proposal, i.e., the first three chapters of my dissertation. Sometimes when I am doing this I get super frustrated because I know what I want to say, but I can't think of the right words to say it in. When this happens, sometimes I will say to myself, “just write some words:” I give up on fancy words and focus on conveying the substance of what I want to say. Like, here's the general idea, in language that would be in an informal email, because that's pretty easy to write. Once these words are on the page, I can come back later, when my brain is producing nice fancy words again, and fix the style.
